To speak Spanish is; if not already considered to be, it will be; one of the most modern American things one can do these days. It's every place you go. Signs of simple direction in public places, such as the mall or grocery store, are posted in both Spanish and English. When you buy appliances and other products the instructions are in English and at least Spanish. From a practical point of view it would be wise to become familiar in the least and/or learn Spanish at the most.
I have noticed, in a lot of job inquiries, the position required or at least considered the speaking of Spanish a plus.
I always wanted to learn Spanish just because I liked the way the language sounds. In my high school and college days it wasn't like it is today. I took a Spanish class three times because I never got a chance to hear and use it after the class. There is no way I would have that problem today. It's everywhere.
Spanish speaking presents another big issue for today's America that is not familiar with it. The effort it takes to learn Spanish and the time involved. With most people the though of this is a turn off right away and will cause you to put Spanish Speaking into that list of things you never get done.
The reality is; the basics of Spanish can be learned in a few weeks at your own pace. I know you have heard that young children pick up a language very easily compared to adults. Well that's not true. It's actually harder for the child. The difference is the LEARNING ENVIRONMENT. The stress and strain of a class room is what makes it harder.
